Chinese Medicine for Maximum Immunity or High Intensity Training

Chinese Medicine for Maximum Immunity: Understanding the Five Elemental Types for Health and Well-Being

Author: Jason Elias

Reflecting on the connection between the rise in chronic immune disorders and toxic environmental and lifestyle patterns, herbalist and acupuncturist Jason Elias and collaborator Katherine Ketcham looked to the 5,000-year-old The Yellow Emperor's Classic of Medicine to seek clues for restoring the balance of body and mind.

In Chinese Medicine for Maximum Immunity, Elias and Ketcham show how to use the preventive strategies and gentle, supportive remedies of traditional Chinese medicine to heal contemporary chronic illnesses and bolster immunity. The book teaches readers how to identify which element--Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water--most directly influences them and how to correct imbalances that can lead to particular physical, emotional, and spiritual disorders with step-by-step instruction for using stress-reduction techniques, diet and exercise, herbs, and acupressure.

Doody Review Services

Reviewer: Troy B. Jorgensen, BS (Utah State University College of Education & Human Services)
Description: This is a comprehensive guide to developing strength training programs. It describes the relationships between science and practice very well. It is an excellent reference for coaches and practitioners dealing with athletes of all levels.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide the reader with scientifically-backed knowledge of factors and processes in developing sport specific strength training programs. The objectives are very worthy. There are few sources available that offer what this book offers in such a comprehensive manner. The authors do a good job of meeting their objectives.
Audience: This book is written for coaches and practitioners in the field of strength training athletes, but also for students. It has enough practical information and basic science basis of strength training that a novice could learn from it. The authors are very credible on the subject matter contained in this book.
Features: This book covers everything from how strength training was started to the fine details of writing an individual strength training program. It covers the scientific aspects of strength training in an easy to read format and does a great job of illustrating this science with tables, graphs and pictures. The book also goes over different programs for different sports and points out the important needs for those sports in regards to a stregth and conditioning program. Chapter 5 is the best part of the book because it covers all the different training methods for different sports. Coaches sometimes do not realize that each sport is different and requires different training protocols. This chapter does a great job of outlining each sport's needs assessment. The use of photos, graphs, and charts keeps the reader interested and helps explain the material in a hands on way.
Assessment: This book is an excellent resource for strength and conditioning professionals. It does an outstanding job of describing why you would incorporate certain aspects of a program. This book sets itself apart from other books in the field because it is so comprehensive and doesn't particularly focus on one sport.

Booknews

Rethinking Thin: The New Science of Weight Loss--And the Myths and Realities of Dieting

Author: Gina Kolata

In this eye-opening book, New York Times science writer Gina Kolata shows that our society’s obsession with dieting and weight loss is less about keeping trim and staying healthy than about money, power, trends, and impossible ideals.
Rethinking Thin is at once an account of the place of diets in American society and a provocative critique of the weight-loss industry. Kolata’s account of four determined dieters’ progress through a study comparing the Atkins diet to a conventional lowcalorie one becomes a broad tale of science and society, of social mores and social sanctions, and of politics and power.

Rethinking Thin asks whether words like willpower are really applicable when it comes to eating and body weight. It dramatizes what it feels like to spend a lifetime struggling with one’s weight and fantasizing about finally, at long last, getting thin. It tells the little-known story of the science of obesity and the history of diets and dieting—scientific and social phenomena that made some people rich and thin and left others fat and miserable. And it offers commonsense answers to questions about weight, eating habits, and obesity—giving us a better understanding of the weight that is right for our bodies.

The New York Times - Emily Bazelon

Here [Kolata's] argument is eminently sensible: Sure, shape up your body. But mostly, make your peace with it.

Publishers Weekly

New York Times reporter Kolata may be the best writer around covering the science of health. Here she offers an eye-opening book that questions all our received wisdom about why we get fat and the health hazards of those extra pounds. In chapters equally entertaining and dismaying, Kolata (Flu) traces the history of dieting fads back to the 19th century; discusses our changing ideas about the ideal body (thinner and thinner); and, most importantly, explains how genetic and biochemical understanding has (at least among researchers) replaced the view of obesity as a lack of self-control. Most dramatic is Kolata's recounting of Jeff Friedman's groundbreaking search at Rockefeller University for the "satiety factor," a hormone he called leptin that tells our brains when we're full. The science alternates with moving chapters in which Kolata follows a group of people in a weight-loss study who are trying desperately to get thin—a quest that, as Kolata makes increasingly clear is sadly futile. In her final—and perhaps most surprising—chapter, Kolata blasts those in the obesity industry—such as Jenny Craig and academic obesity research centers—who are invested in promoting the idea that overweight is unhealthy and diet and exercise are effective despite a raft of evidence to the contrary. This book will change your thinking about weight, whether you struggle with it or not. (May)

To Be Met as a Person: The Dynamics of Attachment in Professional Encounters

Author: Una McCluskey

"The aim of this book is to help us make sense of the feelings we have when we are successful and not successful in providing help for other people when they are in what one would describe as a "state". It also addresses our own or others' experiences of feeling frustrated and defeated by attempts to achieve a compassionate and intelligent response when we are frightened and anxious." -- From the Introduction

This volume looks closely at attachment theory and how it relates to adults when they engage in careseeking-caregiving relationships. The key concept in the book is goal-corrected empathic attunement (GCEA) that has been developed within the context of psychotherapy. A series of empirical studies, designed to identify the elements and processes involved in GCEA that explore the role of empathic attunement in effective care-giving , are detailed.
This is a thought-provoking read that sets out a framework for thinking about the way we interact with one another, and understanding and responding positively to these interactions.

    Doody Review Services

Reviewer: Neva L Crogan, PhD, APRN, BC (University of Arizona College of Nursing)
Description: This is the second edition of a popular, easy to understand nutrition information guide first published in 1996 by the American Dietetic Association.
Purpose: According to the author, the book was created as a practical, up-to-date resource for healthful eating. It is filled with practical advice designed to cover the lifespan from infancy to old age. Since the first edition in 1996, nutrition science has made important discoveries about nutrition and how it can affect overall health. This book will guide the layperson through the many nutrition facts and fallacies and help explain their impact on health and quality of life.
Audience: This nutrition guide was written for the general public to be used as a reference for the entire family. The author has recruited an impressive cadre of contributors and reviewers for this edition.
Features: This edition includes new topics such as herbal and botanical supplements, newly identified nutrition syndromes, and food-drug interactions. Special topics of interest include the latest on food-borne illnesses, facts about functional foods and phytonutritients for health, ethnic food choices, food labeling, food allergens, and how to manage body weight. Overall, this is a well written book presented in a positive manner. Although there are only black-and-white tables and figures, this shortcoming does not seem to detract from the overall presentation. Valuable appendixes and an index are included.
Assessment: Nutrition science is a constantly changing field of study. Due to this, subsequent editions will always be needed. This reference guide is presented in an easy to understand format using simple terms ideal for the general public.

    Library Journal

The American Dietetic Association, along with Duyff, noted food and nutrition consultant, have written a readable and timely book for the lay reader. Some of the topics discussed are the food pyramid, what to eat (and not eat) while taking prescription medicines, preparing your own baby food, nutritional needs of the elderly, eating ostrich meat, the iron content of foods when cooking in iron pots, and the calories in the glue of a postage stamp. Included is a lengthy resource list of associations/organizations that will provide more information. However, an index is not included, and olestra is only briefly mentioned. Duyff gives sound advice, making this a good addition to the Mount Sinai School of Medicine Complete Book of Nutrition (St. Martin's, 1990). Ulcer Free or Self Harm Behavior and Eating Disorders

Ulcer Free!: Nature's Safe & Effective Remedy for Ulcers

    Author: Georges M Halpern

Over 4 million Americans are diagnosed annually with peptic ulcer disease. Millions more go undiagnosed. For them, the resulting gastritis simply becomes a part of their daily existence, and they learn to live with heartburn, acid reflux, nausea, belching, gas, and stomach pain. For many of these people, living on over-the-counter antacids becomes a way of life. Readily available and easy-to-take, these pleasant-tasting products may stop the pain, but only temporarily. Furthermore, while the symptoms are quieted, the underlying condition can get worse. But it doesn't have to be that way. Written by a physician who himself suffered gastric pain, Ulcer Free! is a practical guide to understanding the causes of and effective treatments for peptic ulcer disease.

Ulcer Free! begins with a look at why we get ulcers. It examines the Helicobacter pylori bacterium—the newly discovered culprit behind the majority of stomach ulcers. It also discusses the growing number of ulcers caused by the overuse of NSAIDs—over-the-counter pain relievers more commonly known as aspirin, ibuprofen, naproxen, and a variety of other products. The book also details the most common signs of peptic ulcer disease, and explains the latest testing procedures for determining this condition. Next, a clear and unbiased look is given to the various treatments that can stop the symptoms and actually heal ulcers, including both conventional and alternative therapies. Finally, Ulcer Free! introduces the new breakthrough nutrient Zinc-Carnosine, which can be used in conjunction with other treatments or on its own.

If you are tired of being victim to continual gastric distress, and you are not sure what your next step might be, Ulcer Free! can help. Up-to-date and accurate, it offers the key to permanent relief.

Self Harm Behavior and Eating Disorders: Dynamics, Assessment and Treatment

    Author: John L Levitt

The number of eating disorders patients presenting with symptoms of self-harm is growing quickly, and yet there is surprisingly little known about this unique population. Self-Harm Behavior and Eating Disorders explores the prevalent but largely uncharted relationship between self-injury behaviors and eating disorders symptoms. In the first major book to focus on this area, a renowned group of international scholars and practitioners addresses the subject from a variety of theoretical and practical perspectives. The book is categorized into sections covering epidemiology, psychodynamics, assessment, and a final section covering potential treatment options, including dialectical behavioral therapy, cognitive therapy, interventions strategies, group therapy, and pharmacological approaches. This unrivaled collection of case studies, theoretical exploration, and practical application forms a benchmark for the field, and offers a stepping-stone for new research and innovative treatment strategies. In anarea with little available information, previously spread out among diffuse sources, this volume represents the state-of-the-field resource for anyone working with complex eating disorders patients.

Light on Life or Dr Yoga

Light on Life: The Yoga Journey to Wholeness, Inner Peace, and Ultimate Freedom

    Author: B K S Iyengar

B.K.S. Iyengar—hailed as "the Michelangelo of yoga" (BBC) and considered by many to be the most important living yoga master—has spent much of his life introducing the modern world to the ancient practice of yoga. Yoga’s popularity is soaring, but its widespread acceptance as an exercise for physical fitness and the recognition of its health benefits have not been matched by an understanding of the emotional, intellectual, and spiritual development that the yogic tradition can also offer. In Light on Life, B.K.S. Iyengar brings readers this new and more complete understanding of the yogic journey. Written with the depth of this sage’s great wisdom, Light on Life is the culmination of a master’s spiritual genius, a treasured companion to his seminal Light on Yoga.

    Publishers Weekly

Master yogi Iyengar offers what may turn out to be his last written words on the discipline that he helped popularize with Light on Yoga. Published in 1966, that first book became yoga's "bible" and set the standard for yoga books, providing pictures and instructions. The 86-year-old teacher here expounds the philosophy of yoga-its metaphysics, of which yoga poses, or asanas, represent the physical component. Iyengar yoga is vigorous because it involves the body, mind and spirit, and the master explains those interrelationships clearly. Chapters elaborate on aspects of yoga-the physical, energetic, mental, intellectual and divine, showing the architecture of the comprehensive system of spiritual teachings that lead to samadhi, the state of blissful absorption. Yoga is about health and purity, flexibility and divinity. While this book underlines the intellectual aspect of yoga, it is insufficient for a new yoga student, no substitute for yoga sadhana, practice that requires and integrates body and mind. Not the book with which to begin the yoga journey, it is highly recommended for those advanced on the path and interested in learning from a master of flexibility and wisdom. (Oct.) Library Journal

Still teaching in India at 85, Iyengar came to the United States 50 years ago to share yoga. His first book, Light in Yoga, was published in 1966 and has since become the most popular yoga book ever written, translated into 18 language. Since then, he has educated instructors and students in his style of yoga, which stresses the importance of posture alignment. Today, yoga's popularity is growing as strictly a fitness exercise, ignoring the importance of the emotional, intellectual, and spiritual. In his new work, Iyengar emphasizes the integration of mind, body, and soul; the wisdom of Patanjali's Yoga Sutrasis woven throughout. For emotional stability, he also includes asanas, a series of postures sequenced to relax one totally. Iyengar shares here the knowledge he has accumulated in 70 years of yoga study. His last book, the shining jewel of yoga works, is recommended for all libraries that have a yoga collection.-Dede Archer, Naples, FL. Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.

Tan Tien CHI Kung or When Society Becomes an Addict

Tan Tien CHI Kung: Foundational Exercises for Empty Force and Perineum Power

    Author: Mantak Chia

    MARTIAL ARTS / TAOISM

Tan Tien Chi Kung is the art of cultivating and condensing chi in the lower abdomen--the tan tien--the fundamental power storehouse of the body. Known as the Ocean of Chi to the ancient Taoists, this lower abdominal area holds the key to opening the body and the mind for the free and continuous movement of chi.

Tan Tien Chi Kung contains specific breathing and movement exercises that develop the power of the chi stored in the body to increase vitality, strengthen organs, and promote self-healing. Mantak Chia explains how these exercises also provide a safe and effective method for receiving earth energy, which allows the practitioner to achieve balance physically, mentally, and spiritually--all of which are essential for the more advanced practices of Iron Shirt Chi Kung and Cosmic Healing.

It is our mind that directs and guides our chi, but if the mind and body are out of balance or under stress, the mind cannot perform this function. The tan tien actually contains a large quantity of neurotransmitters, making it a key source of body intelligence. It is for this reason the Taoists also referred to Tan Tien Chi Kung as Second Brain Chi Kung and created exercises that would allow practitioners to gain awareness of the tan tien’s function to restore the mind-body balance that is essential for spiritual growth and optimal well-being.

A student of several Taoist masters, Mantak Chia developed the Universal Tao System in 1979 and has taught tens of thousands of students from all over the world. He tours the United States annually, giving workshops and lectures. He is the director of the Universal Tao Center in northernThailand and is the author of twenty-five books, including the bestselling The Multi-Orgasmic Man.

    When Society Becomes an Addict

    Author: Anne Wilson Schaef

An incisive look at the system of addiction pervasive in Western society today.

    Library Journal

than focusing on addictions to such substances as alcohol, drugs, or food or to processes such as gambling, sex, or work, this interesting and unusual treatise uses the concept of relationship addiction. According to this concept, an individual is seen as always being in a superior (or inferior) position to another, an addictive situation that creates self-centeredness, dishonesty, and greed. The symptons associated with relationship addiction are equated with those associated with the ``White Male System'' (described in Schaef's Women's Reality , LJ 6/15/81) and provide telling insights into why we have a dysfunctional society many of whose members are addicted to substances and processes. Edited by Ayana Byrd and Akiba Solomon
    Foreword by Sonia Sanchez

    Library Journal

Twenty-five African American women, including Jill Nelson (Sexual Healing), recording artist Jill Scott, and spiritual life coach Iyanla Vanzant, reveal their innermost thoughts about sexuality, weight problems, eating disorders, and much more. Reading for the most part like erotic fiction, these true stories reflect how the women feel about themselves, how they deal with unwanted attention from men on the street, and how they feel about their changing bodies during pregnancy, among other issues. One author of Senegalese descent describes how her skin color in the United States caused black men to ignore her, while in Senegal she was simply adored. Another writer speaks of sex in her teen years, how promiscuous she was, and how she misused her body. A former prostitute, now in prison for killing a john, shares how she was molested as a child by her uncles and cousins, which led her to hate herself. These women have all learned to "look in the mirror without turning away." Edited by journalists Byrd and Solomon, these essays will be an inspiration to young African American women in the age of hip-hop where negative images of them abound in music videos and elsewhere. Recommended for African American women's collections in public libraries.-Ann Burns, Library Journal Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.

Cancer Biopathy or Pilgrim of Love

    Cancer Biopathy

    Author: Wilhelm Reich

A Shrinking Disease Due to Chronic Sexual Starvation

What is Cancer? Traditionally, medical science has thought of it as an invasive tumor arising spontaneously in an otherwise healthy organism. In contrast, Wilhelm Reich defines cancer not as a tumor--the tumor is merely a late manifestation of the disease--but a systemic disease due to chronic thwaring of natural sexual functioning. In this radically different scientific investigation of a process that ends, literally, in the putrefaction of the living body due to chronic suffocatin of the tissues, Reich has arrived at the conclusion that "cancer is the most significant somatic expression of biophysiological effect of sexual stasis." If this is so, there is a far greater possibility for prevention of cancer than for its treatment.

Sham: How the Self-Help Movement Made America Helpless

    Author: Steve Salerno

Self-help: To millions of Americans it seems like a godsend. To many others it seems like a joke. But as investigative reporter Steve Salerno reveals in this groundbreaking book, it’s neither—in fact it’s much worse than a joke. Going deep inside the Self-Help and Actualization Movement (fittingly, the words form the acronym SHAM), Salerno offers the first serious exposé of this multibillion-dollar industry and the real damage it is doing—not just to its paying customers, but to all of American society.
Based on the author’s extensive reporting—and the inside look at the industry he got while working at a leading “lifestyle” publisher—SHAM shows how thinly credentialed “experts” now dispense advice on everything from mental health to relationships to diet to personal finance to business strategy. Americans spend upward of $8 billion every year on self-help programs and products. And those staggering financial costs are actually the least of our worries.
SHAM demonstrates how the self-help movement’s core philosophies have infected virtually every aspect of American life—the home, the workplace, the schools, and more. And Salerno exposes the downside of being uplifted, showing how the “empowering” message that dominates self-help today proves just as damaging as the blame-shifting rhetoric of self-help’s “Recovery” movement.
    SHAM also reveals:
    • How self-help gurus conduct extensive market research to reach the same customers over and over—without ever helping them
    • The inside story on the most notoriousgurus—from Dr. Phil to Dr. Laura, from Tony Robbins to John Gray
    • How your company might be wasting money on motivational speakers, “executive coaches,” and other quick fixes that often hurt quality, productivity, and morale
    • How the Recovery movement has eradicated notions of personal responsibility by labeling just about anything—from drug abuse to “sex addiction” to shoplifting—a dysfunction or disease
    • How Americans blindly accept that twelve-step programs offer the only hope of treating addiction, when in fact these programs can do more harm than good
    • How the self-help movement inspired the disastrous emphasis on self-esteem in our schools
    • How self-help rhetoric has pushed people away from proven medical treatments by persuading them that they can cure themselves through sheer application of will
As Salerno shows, to describe self-help as a waste of time and money vastly understates its collateral damage. And with SHAM, the self-help industry has finally been called to account for the damage it has done.
    Also available as an eBook

    Publishers Weekly

You! Yes, you! Are you addicted to self-help books? Do you require "empowerment" to reverse your "victimhood"? If so, relax-you're far from alone. The Self-Help and Actualization Movement (the titular SHAM) is, according to Salerno, an $8-billion-a-year industry that depends on legions of repeat customers. Salerno presents a carefully researched-and devastating-expos on SHAM's predatory and fraudulent practices and its corrosive effects on society. As former editor of Men's Health magazine's books program, Salerno knows the terrain from the inside. With judicious delight, he exposes the grandiloquent bluster and blithe hypocrisy of Dr. Phil (who, psychologists say, shames rather than helps his guests) and Dr. Laura (the preacher of family values who didn't know when her own mother was murdered), among many others. He cites examples of junk science, such as Tony Robbins's talk of "the energy frequency of foods," and charges that untested alternative medicine draws people away from proven medical treatments. In addition to detailing the raw facts, Salerno excels at pinpointing the self-abnegating strategy the self-help industry employs: namely, tearing you down in the name of building you up. And the positivity yields questionable results in any case. The self-help industry should not be dismissed as "silly but benign," says Salerno, and he documents how it has undermined psychology, education and health care in this blistering critique. (June 28) Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.

    Library Journal

Salerno, a freelance feature writer, essayist, and investigative reporter whose work has been featured in Harper's, the New York Times Magazine, and the Washington Post, minces no words in this evisceration of the self-help and actualization movement (SHAM). He takes on contemporary gurus like Dr. Phil McGraw, Tony Robbins, John Gray, and Dr. Laura Schlessinger-anyone, in fact, who dispenses popular advice or advocates psychological or alternative medical self-help (even 12-step programs take a hit). Ultimately, Salerno argues that SHAM, a multibillion-dollar industry, has fostered a culture of victimization that discourages people from taking responsibility for their lives, thereby undermining the character of our nation. This conclusion would have been much more persuasive if he had dispensed with the vitriol. Wendy Kaminer's I'm Dysfunctional, You're Dysfunctional: The Recovery Movement and Other Self-Help Fashions is a more effective critique; Salerno's book is recommended only for large public libraries.-Lynne F. Managing Menopause Naturally or The Pilates Method of Physical and Mental Conditioning

Managing Menopause Naturally: Before, During, and After

    Author: Emily A Kan

In this informative new book, Managing Menopause Naturally, Dr. Emily Kane sets out to banish the current myths about menopause, making the important point that menopause is not a disease that requires medical intervention. It is instead, she says, a natural transition to be approached as a new type of freedom. Dr. Kane believes that menopause is a gift that allows many of us to live many more years -- without periods or the specter of unwanted pregnancies, or, for some, the roller coaster of premenstrual moodiness. This book is her roadmap to help women navigate into, through, and out the other side of menopause, and do so in radiant health.

Part One takes up the symptoms of hormonal change in the initial perimenopausal period, which can include mood swings, hot flashes, night sweats, bone and hair loss, and foggy thinking, and provides practical, natural, non-pharmaceutical solutions. Part Two recommends "incredibly useful" natural solutions, including bio-identical hormones, ways to protect the liver, and many different natural supplements. Part Three discusses the role that the ovaries and the adrenal and thyroid glands play in the female body before, during, and after menopause. The final section is an overview of how to stay healthy for a long time, and gives specifics on maintaining a functional immune system and reducing the risks of heart disease and cancer.

Throughout, Dr. Kane dismantles the myths created around menopause -- how it causes diseases and turns women into raging terrors; how, because women live longer now, their estrogen must be replaced; and how all menopausal women should be treated with standard hormones. She says these and other related myths are all inspired by doctors and pharmaceutical companies, and tells us how it is possible instead to manage this transitional phase naturally and comfortably. The back of this book has resources and references for follow-up and further information.

How does life become different when we awaken to this deeper level? Is anxiety a natural state? What exactly is a transformation?

    How We Eat or Vaginas

How We Eat: Appetite, Culture, and the Psychology of Food

    Author: Leon Rappoport

Tracing culinary customs from the Stone Age to the stovetop range, from the raw to the nuked, this book elucidates the factors and myths shaping Americans' eating habits. The diversity of food habits and rituals is considered from a psychological perspective. Explored are questions such as Why does the working class prefer sweet drinks over bitter? Why do the affluent tend to roast their potatoes? and What is so comforting about macaroni and cheese anyway? The many contradictions of Americans' relationships with food are identified: food is both a primal source of sensual pleasure and a major cultural anxiety; Americans adore celebrity chefs, but no one cooks at home anymore; the gourmet health food industry is soaring, yet a longtime love affair with fast food endures. The future of food is also covered, including speculation about whether traditional meals will one day evolve into the mere popping of a nutrition capsule.

    Gastronomica

The focus of How We Eat is welcome...fun to peruse because it contains so many small pieces of information that are interesting to those of us who love to cook, eat, and talk about food and eating.

    Vaginas: An Owner's Manual

    Author: Carol Livoti

An engaging, thorough, and much-needed explanation of the working vagina, Vaginas is a book of accessible facts written by down-to-earth authors whose only agenda is female education. The authors (the mother is an ob/gyn, the daughter a writer) avoid the flowery language and feminist agenda of other books on the subject. They take readers from the mood swings of puberty to the hot flashes of menopause with warmth, humor, and candor. Subjects include the lowdown on hymens, a word on waxing, tips on retrieving lost items, heavy periods, working out the vagina, significant problems (STDs, ectopic pregnancies, fibroids, yeast infections, herpes), ways to keep an aging body performing, and the fun stuff — sex.

    Publishers Weekly

This empowering, sex-positive guide to womanhood is for anyone who has ever found herself uninformed or misinformed about her own machinery. Topp, a single, 20-something writer, teams up with her mother, Livoti, a seasoned gynecologist, to demystify the female reproductive system. The younger author felt lucky to grow up with a mother who was knowledgeable and forthcoming about the female anatomy, especially when she reached her teen years and realized that most of her friends weren't so lucky. Too many women are uncomfortable discussing their private parts with friends or even doctors, say the authors, and this can lead to misconceptions about their own bodies. Despite the catchy title, this is a deep examination of the body. Starting with an overview of the basic organs, then moving into menstruation, maintenance, menopause and medical problems, the authors investigate every nook and cranny of those elusive female parts. They explore sex, contraception, STDs and abortion from a nonjudgmental, pro-choice, woman-to-woman perspective. Although the snippets of banter between mother and daughter (as well as the anecdotes from the life of an ob-gyn) add little, this is a never condescending and always articulate resource. Agent, Erin Reel. (Oct.) Forecast: Vaginas' winning mix of spunk and practicality should make it a popular women's health seller. It's received advance praise from Candace Bushnell and Eve Ensler. Library Journal

A mother-daughter team, ob/gyn Livoti and Topp have collaborated on a reassuring book that aims to decrease women's insecurities about their physical selves. Besides dealing with the vagina, the book covers topics like contraception, sexually transmitted diseases, reproductive health, and problems related to other areas of the reproductive system, e.g., the uterus and cervix. This easy-to-read manual is filled with edifying sidebars based on Livoti's years of medical practice, and while it refers to studies from medical journals, it does not offer any references, suggested readings, or web sites for readers who might want more information--ironic, given its aim to empower women. Still, the book informs without being too technical. Recommended for public health libraries, especially those with consumer or women's health collections.--Rebecca Raszewski, Drexel Univ.
