All about Muscle or Facing Life

All about Muscle: A User's Guide

Author: Irwin M Siegel

Chapters cover such diverse topics as anatomy, growth and development, physiology, energy, exercise, injury, and disease There are tables of instructional materials, illustrations, and numerous diagrams to help readers understand the text. A list of books for suggested further reading and a handy glossary are appended.

The book is designed for the intelligent reader who wishes to understand this important organ system of his or her body. It was written as a companion to All About Bone: An Owner's Manual, which treated the skeletal system in a similar manner. It covers practical matters such as proper exercise and diet, the prevention and treatment of injury, muscle and sports, relaxation techniques, muscle building, and much more.

All About Muscle: A User's Guide will teach readers how to keep their muscles healthy and strong. Between its covers, readers will find everything they need to know in order to to understand their muscles, how they work, and how to keep them in top form.

Jose Antonio

In this easy-to-read paperback the author broadly covers many aspects of skeletal muscle physiology. According to the author, the purpose is to provide the reader with basic and applied knowledge of skeletal muscle physiology. Certainly, these are worthy objectives and for the most part, he meets these objectives. It is not immediately clear who the audience for this book might be. It is much too simple for PhDs or MDs who study or research skeletal muscle. A quick perusal of the text might convince you that a layperson with an avid interest in the subject could pick up the book and become edified. The author is a credible authority of the subject. The book follows a sequence that is wholly unsurprising (history, muscle anatomy, physiology, exercise metabolism, disease states, etc.). For the most part, the author provides basic knowledge in all of these areas. However, there are glaring errors that should be addressed. He discusses the role of "oxygen debt" in sprinters (incorrectly). Furthermore, he denotes that in order of "athletic efficiency," African-Americans rank first, Asians second, and Caucasians last. Now whether this is true is debatable (and certainly worthy of discussion); however, it isn't clear how he arrived at this conclusion. Perhaps one of the more glaring errors (as a sports fan) is his statement that Lou Gehrig had the second most home runs after Babe Ruth. Of course, Hank Aaron broke Babe Ruth's record nearly 30 years ago! In general, the "appearance" of the book (particularly the medical illustrations) could be greatly improved. However, for those with little knowledge of skeletal muscle, this book could serve as a nice introduction to the topic. Forthose who are well versed in the field of skeletal muscle physiology, this book is too simplistic. Still, I would recommend the book for those who need to brush up on the subject or to beginning students in the biological sciences.

Fitness Management

...this book condenses information about muscles into an informative guide..includes tables of instructional material, illustrations and diagrams, and covers practical matters such as proper exercise and diet, the prevention and treatment of injury, muscles and sports, relaxation techniques and muscle building.

Book Bag

...(a no-nonsense guide...There's a terrific chapter on muscle injuries and how to cope with them, a prescription for an exercise program which does not assume you desire to be a spa poster-girl or the middle linebacker for the Baltimore Ravens, and a great "For Further Reference" section...which is always useful.

In the Open or Transformation through Bodywork

In the Open: Diary of a Homeless Alcoholic

Author: Timothy E Donohu

Compelling, raw, and painfully self-aware, In the Open describes an existence most people can barely imagine. A first-hand account of one man's struggle with homelessness and alcoholism, this diary records a world full of physical degradation and despair that is not without unpredictable moments of striking beauty.
Donohue's experiences are brutal, but his perceptions are poetic. This account of an intelligent and sensitive man in the grip of alcoholism and homelessness challenges our perceptions of those on the margins of American contemporary life.
"Donohue recorded this often-moving account during a four-year period of homelessness caused by his alcoholism. . . . There are many brilliant observations here on a range of topics, including human nature, technology, and capitalism. . . . Donohue's life on the fringe also provides an inside look at the homeless system of overnight shelters, labor offices, and food stamp providers. But, somehow, in spite of all the negatives, a hopeful book emerges."—Booklist
"A startlingly original book. In this confessional age, Donohue's diary becomes a different sort of tell-all, a palimpsest that forces us to extract the author from his own writing. . . . Donohue comes to resemble Swift's Gulliver"—Nicholas Nesson, Boston Phoenix
"Donohue punctuates his account of 'domiciling within the black walls of a mosquito-infested night' with rambling metaphysical asides in the style of an eighteenth-century philosophe."—Molly McQuade, Lingua Franca
"Despite hunger, homelessness, dead-end jobs and abusive drinking, what is most striking about Donohue is his amazing optimism andendurance."—Patrick Markee, Nation
"Donohue is a gifted writer. . . . But what gives [his diary] the breath of life is that it is written by an artist."—Alec Wilkinson, Los Angeles Times Book Review

Womens Health or Encyclopedia of Dietary Supplements

Womens Health: Complexities and Differences

Author: Sheryl Ed Ruzek

Challenging purely biomedical definitions of women's health, Women's Health: Complexities and Differences draws attention to social, cultural, and behavioral elements crucial to a broader understanding of the issues. The contributors to this volume raise important questions about the directions currently being taken to improve women's health in the United States: Is women's health merely the absence of disease? What have been the consequences of promoting narrow biomedical models of health? What do the pervasive patterns and puzzles in the distribution of disease, illness, and death among different groups of women tell us about the sources of ill health? How well do national agendas address all women's health care priorities? What are the implications for social action? Particular attention is paid in this collection of essays to how race, class, gender, and culture shape and in turn are shaped by treatment options and health care for certain subpopulations among Native American, Latina, Asian American, and African American women. Discussions of reproductive health, mental health, violence, and the treatment of stigmatized women raise perplexing issues about choice, chance, and social change.

Encyclopedia of Dietary Supplements

Author: Paul M Coates

Situated as a scientific checkpoint for the many over-the-counter supplements carried in today's nutritional products marketplace, this definitive Encyclopedia of Dietary Supplements presents peer-reviewed, objective entries that rigorously review the most significant scientific research-funneling basic chemical, preclinical, and clinical data into a descriptive form universally useful to health care professionals, researchers, and educated, health-conscious consumers.

Library Journal

All the editors of this scientific volume are highly placed at the National Institute of Health, while the institutions of the 100 contributors range from Columbia University to Memorial University, Newfoundland. Seventy-five supplements are included, among them S-Adenosylmethionine (better known as SAM-e), ephedra, evening primrose, reishi mushrooms, riboflavin, and zinc. Though the focus of each entry is the supplement's chemical or biochemical properties (chemical structures are included), there is also detailed information where relevant on historical use, physiology, mechanisms of action, clinical and preclinical studies, potential health benefits, safety, adverse effects, and numerous other topics. All tables, charts, and figures are in black and white, though some figures may be viewed (with difficulty) in color at the publisher's web site, www. decker.com, where updates to the encyclopedia will also be available. Each entry includes a lengthy bibliography of references, mostly from the most current medical literature and occasionally from web sites. There is an index but no appendixes. Alternative resources to consider are the free International Bibliographic Information on Dietary Supplements database, http://grande.nal.usda.gov/ibids/index. php, which contains 730,000 citations drawn from four major databases, and the fee-based Natural Medicines Comprehensive Database (also available in print), which contains more than 1000 evidence-based monographs about dietary supplements and herbs. Bottom Line The inclusion of more than 75 supplements would have been welcome (something that might have been easily accomplished through the use of less white space, smaller typeface, and thinner paper). Additionally, the preface states that the encyclopedia was written for "students and researchers of physiology and chemistry, for healthcare providers, and for consumers," but it would take an extremely dedicated consumer to make the most of this book. Dietary Supplements, edited by Pamela Mason (Pharmaceutical, 2001) is written for the health professional, but the entries are far more readable. Given the emphasis on chemistry and biochemistry, the Encyclopedia of Dietary Supplements would be suitable for pharmacy, pharmaceutical, and medical libraries.-Martha E. Dr Gundrys Diet Evolution or Not So Golden Years

Dr. Gundry's Diet Evolution: Turn Off the Genes That Are Killing You--And Your Waistline--And Drop the Weight for Good

Author: Steven R Gundry

YOUR GENES ARE TRYING TO KILL YOU– AND YOU’RE EATING IT UP!

Does losing weight and staying healthy feel like a battle? Well, it’s really a war. Your enemies are your own genes, backed by millions of years of evolution, and the only way to win is to outsmart them.

Dr. Steven Gundry explains what your body is “thinking” and tells you why, surprisingly, your genes actually “want” you to be fat–even sick. Eating many so-called healthy foods gives your body the wrong messages and may activate what Dr. Gundry calls “killer genes,” whose purpose is to get rid of you. Now, with his revolutionary ideas, which enabled him to easily lose 70 pounds, you can reprogram your body for the health, life, looks, and longevity you desire! And this is a diet that works equally well for women and men, no matter what their age.

Transform yourself with this three-phase plan:

• The Teardown Phase will train your body to stop storing fat and curb your appetite, which enables you to lose weight while turning off “killer genes.”
• The Restoration Phase gives your genes the resources to make you healthy and strong.
• The Longevity Phase will allow you to enjoy your new, slim, vibrant body for a good, long time by making your genes protect you from aging.

This entirely new way of looking at eating, weight loss, and the aging process teaches you how to manipulate your body’s programming, learn to deactivate “killer genes,” and keep disease and aging at bay.

Dr. Gundry’s Diet Evolution shares the health secrets other doctors won’ttell you:

• Why plants are “good” for you because they’re “bad” for you and meat is “bad” because it’s “good” for you
• Why plateauing on this diet is actually a sign that you’re on the right track
• How to choose micronutrient-rich, “calorie scant” foods instead of just “low calorie” foods
• Why artificial sweeteners have the same effects as sugar on your health and your waistline
• Why taking antacids, statins, and drugs for high blood pressure and arthritis only mask health issues instead of addressing them
• Why thinning hair and skin tags are two signals that your genes are trying to kill you

Along with the meal planner, 70 delicious recipes, and inspirational stories, Dr. Gundry’s easy-to-memorize tips will keep you healthy and on course:

• If it’s “beige” or “white,” keep it out of sight.
• If you eat dark “green,” you will become lean.
• If you eat fake fats, you’ll get heart attacks.

Publishers Weekly

Thoracic surgeon Gundry has invented many devices now commonly used in heart surgeries. Here, he shows readers how to avoid such surgeries as well as obesity, high cholesterol and blood pressure levels, diabetes and even cancer by outsmarting a genetic code set for survival when food was scarce and physical activity strenuous. Our culture, technology and lifestyles may have changed, Gundry says, but our genes have not. The first part of his three-phase diet aims to break reliance on high-carb, sugar-laden foods. In phases two and three, readers can broaden their eating plans somewhat, but the emphasis is on nutrient-dense, calorie-sparse greens. Some may wince at the "Gundryisms" that pepper the text ("If it's white, keep it out of sight"; "If it's beige, better behave"), but many will find them easy to remember. User-friendly exercise and meal plans, as well as recipes for some unusual foods (among them Chicken Under a Brick; Angelic Jungle Princess with Chicken, a Thai recipe adapted from a dish served at a restaurant on Oahu; and "pasta" dishes made with low-cal, high-fiber shirataki noodles) round out this surprising take on the epidemic of obesity-related diseases. (Mar.)

Ingrid Levin - Library Journal

Heart surgeon Steven Gundry takes an evolutionary and gene-based approach in this challenging but intriguing diet and nutrition guide, which was initially designed to improve the heart health of his seriously ill patients. With a friendly and enthusiastic tone, Gundry explains his view that eating a healthy diet can "turn off" genes in the human body that lead to weight gain and chronic disease. Gundry's rather complex three-phase diet plan focuses on reducing or eliminating grains and sugar, in favor of lean protein and large amounts of vegetables. The initial phases of Gundry's eating plan bear some similarities to the Paleolithic or caveman diet, as presented in books such as Ray Audette's NeanderThinor Loren Cordain's The Paleo Diet. While the strict requirements of Gundry's plan may be too extreme for some, and Gundry's explanations of his theories are occasionally confusing, this thought-provoking nutrition guide will likely appeal to open-minded dieters facing health problems that require a major lifestyle change. Suitable for larger public libraries.

Books about: From Family to Market or Latinos in a Changing US Economy

Not So Golden Years: Caregiving, the Frail Elderly, and the Long-Term Care Establishment

Author: Laura Olson

Since the 1990s, the politics and policies of aging and elder care have emerged as one of the more important issues both nationally and worldwide. Because of population aging and the lengthening of the age span itself, the prevalence of chronic disabling diseases is increasing considerably, rendering more people dependent on others to meet their daily needs. The Not So Golden Years: Caregiving, the Frail Elderly and the Long-Term Care Establishment explores the forces shaping long-term care policy in the U.S. and its impact on individuals and public budgets. The book addresses the world of elder care from the vantage point of gender, race, ethnicity and social class. It systematically describes the experiences of family caregivers, the workers who comprise the caring labor force, and the frail elderly themselves, showing how each of these vulnerable players, mostly women, are affected by long-term care policies and practices.

The Handbook of Mind-Body Medicine for Primary Care introduces an evidence-based mind-body approach to the medical and behavioral problems of primary care patients. Evidence-based mind-body practice draws on the best available scientific research, advocating the integration of well-documented mind-body therapies into primary health care. The handbook summarizes current mind-body practice and provides an overview of the basic techniques, including biofeedback, neurofeedback, relaxation therapies, hypnotherapy, cognitive-behavioral therapies, acupuncture, and spiritual therapies. The editors also thoroughly demonstrate the application of these techniques to common disorders such as headache, chronic pain, and essential hypertension, as well as anxiety, depression, chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia, and sleep disorders.

The Handbook includes educational models with guidelines for physicians, nurses, physicians' assistants, and behavioral health practitioners. The book closes with a look at the existential and spiritual side of the human encounter with sickness and disease. This handbook will benefit a wide variety of health providers in primary care.

The Handbook is divided into four parts:

  • Part I introduces the conceptual models from the psychophysiological perspective for understandingfunctional medical problems.
  • Part II describes specific clinical tools and interventions.
  • Part III overviews the best documented cognitive-behavioral approaches and alternative therapies to common disorders.
  • Part IV provides educational models for practitioners in each of the mind-body disciplines.

Breast Cancer: Daughters Tell Their Stories

Author: Julianne S Oktay

I will always and forever feel I have a 'hole' in my life where my mother once existed.

This insightful book tells the stories of women whose mothers had breast cancer. It uses their own voices to express the common fears and expectations of daughters in the periods before and during their mothers' illnesses, involving genetic risks, death and dying, and changes in their relationships. The case studies, tables and figures, and two appendices will benefit health professionals and counselors, while the poignant narratives will help mothers and daughters better understand their experiences with breast cancer.

I was kind of surprised to be alive and free of cancer at age 42, when at this point my mother was crippled by metastases. When I get to be 43 the age at which my mother died, or maybe when I get to 44, it's like, 'what do I do?' I have this life that I didn't expect to have.

Breast Cancer: Daughters Tell Their Stories presents the results of a qualitative, grounded theory study of breast cancer survivors, providing in-depth information about an aspect of breast cancer that has been previously overlooked. The book examines the daughters' experiences through four phases the period prior to mother's illness, the period during mother's illness and treatment, the period following mother's death (if mother dies), and the long-term impact. From this study, recommendations are compiled for providing or improving services for tomorrow's daughters.

The radical mastectomy left her scarred and disfigured below her nightgown. It was bruised and nasty looking. That was kind of scary. I think that has terrified me since. Sometimes I'll have pains in my left breast and that's what I visualize. It's terrifying.

From an empathetic perspective, this book reveals how many daughters react to and deal with their mothers' diagnoses, depending on their age and family situation at the time of their mothers' illnesses. It shows how daughters can gain a more accurate idea of their level of risk by providing educational materials and developing new strategies for communication. It also helps breast cancer survivors see how their illnesses can shape their daughters' future outlook, offering new inspiration for resolving and preventing family crises.

Preventive Health Measures for Lesbian and Bisexual Women or Misinformation Concerning Child Sexual Abuse and Adult Survivors

Preventive Health Measures for Lesbian and Bisexual Women

Author: Robin M Mathy

Help lesbian and bisexual women better manage their physical health

The lack of information about lesbian and bisexual women's health can in part be attributed to the lack of health research focused on this population. Preventive Health Measures for Lesbian and Bisexual Women helps fill this gap by providing the latest empirical, evidence-based research to address current health care issues confronted by sexual minority women (SMW). This vital source explores several diverse factors constraining the ability of lesbian and bisexual women of color to receive proper health care and exercise preventative health measures including discrimination, oppression, and stigmatization.

The reasons behind several SMW health risks are psychosocial and behavioral factors often not considered by health practitioners. Preventive Health Measures for Lesbian and Bisexual Women examines these factors in detail and provides a firm starting point for further research and ways to best address the challenges. Studies on SMW behavior and perceptions reveal how lesbians and bisexual women make choices on various vital health issues such as alcohol use, nutrition, weight management, exercise, safer sex practices, sunscreen use, and self-breast examination. The research in this book is of the highest quality, the discussions on the findings top-notch, and the conclusions important for every policymaker, health practitioner, and researcher to understand.

Research topics in Preventive Health Measures for Lesbian and Bisexual Women include:
• the effects of lesbian or bisexual identity on preventative health behaviors
• cancer prevention and screening behaviors using American Cancer Societyguidelines as the standards for comparison
• experiences with treating physicians and their attitudes—positive and negative
• ways to help lesbians with cancer receive better support by service providers and lesbian communities
• comparison between lesbian and heterosexual women of psychosocial responses to treatment for breast cancer
• qualitative study on lesbians who frequent bars
• characteristics of sexual minority women across four survey sampling methods

Preventive Health Measures for Lesbian and Bisexual Women is timely, crucial information for health practitioners of all types, women's activists, public health professionals, and researchers.

Misinformation Concerning Child Sexual Abuse and Adult Survivors

Author: Charles L Whitfield

Successfully navigate the minefield of misinformation that can prevent justice from being done in child sexual abuse cases!

From the Foreword, by Robert Geffner, PhD, editor of the Journal of Child Sexual Abuse: “Too often, the public and some professionals have been misled by media publicity and articles . . . that appear scientific, but in reality, are biased opinions or over-generalized research. Forensic cases are being decided in many courts based upon the recommendations of so-called 'expert witnesses’who do not actually know the clinical research or understand the dynamics of such abusive relationships.”

This much-needed book points out and corrects misinformation that everyone who works with victims, offenders, or families in which sexual abuse has occurred needs to understand clearly. Especially vital in today's political climate, Misinformation Concerning Child Sexual Abuse and Adult Survivors gives you state-of-the-science information on such myths as “false memory syndrome,” “recovered memory therapy,” and the “lack of harm” to some sexually abused boys.

Misinformation Concerning Child Sexual Abuse and Adult Survivors examines:

  • forensic issues, including the “false memory” defense and how the long-term impact of childhood sexual abuse is often misrepresented in court
  • three separate expert examinations of Rind, Tromovitch, and Bauserman's well-known--and often misrepresented--review of long-term child sexual abuse outcomes
  • treatment recommendations and guidelines for addressing the memory controversy in clinical practice
  • the fascinating casehistory/cautionary tale of the child molester Robert Halsey, who was convicted and sentenced to two life sentences in 1993, and how public and academic resources were misused to claim he was wrongly convicted

Booknews

Seeking to correct media and "expert witness" misrepresentations concerning child sexual abuse (CSA) and its long-term outcomes, Dr. Whitfield (alcohol studies, Rutgers U., NJ) and his co-editors introduce themes examined in eight articles on what has been identified as a major public health issue, including: societal denial, disinformation as a legal defense strategy, and clinical implications of "false memory syndrome." Also includes critiques of a controversial meta-analysis (Rind, et al., 1998) minimizing CSA sequelae, and a case history of misguided efforts to exonerate a child molester. Co-published simultaneously as Journal of Child Sexual Abuse, v.9, nos.3/4, 2001. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

Infanticide or Body Mechanics and Self Care Manual

Infanticide: Psychosocial and Legal Perspectives on Mothers Who Kill

Author: Margaret G Spinelli

Maternal infanticide, or the murder of a child in its first year of life by its mother, elicits sorrow, anger, horror, and outrage. But the perpetrator is often a victim, too.

The editor of this revealing work asks us to reach beyond rage, stretch the limits of compassion, and enter the minds of mothers who kill their babies& mdash;with the hope that advancing the knowledge base and stimulating inquiry in this neglected area of maternal-infant research will save young lives.

Written to help remedy today's dearth of up-to-date, research-based literature, this unique volume brings together a multidisciplinary group of 17 experts& mdash;scholars, clinicians, researchers, clinical and forensic psychiatrists, pediatric psychoanalysts, attorneys, and an epidemiologist& mdash; who focus on the psychiatric perspective of this tragic cause of infant death.

This comprehensive, practical work is organized into four parts for easy reference:

• Part I presents historical and epidemiological data, including a compelling discussion of the contrasting legal views of infanticide in the United States, United Kingdom, and other Western countries, a review of the latest statistics on maternal infanticide, and a discussion of the problems of underreporting and the lack of available documentation.
• Part II covers the psychiatric, psychological, cultural, and biological underpinnings of infanticide, detailing how to identify, evaluate, and treat postpartum psychiatric disorders. The authors explore clinical diagnosis, symptom recognition, risk factors, biological precipitants, and alternative motives, such as cultural infanticide. Chapter 3, developed to assistthe attorney or mental health professional in understanding the implications of postpartum psychiatric illness as they relate to infanticide, presents a sensitive and thorough inquiry into infanticidal ideation.
• Part III focuses on contemporary legislation, criminal defenses, and disparate treatment in U.S. law and compares U.S. law with the U.K.'s model of probation and treatment. Chapter 8 is an especially useful resource for the attorney or expert psychiatric witness preparing for an infanticide/neonaticide case in the criminal court system.
• Part IV discusses clinical experience with mothers as perpetrators and countertransference in therapy, the range of mother-infant interactions (from healthy to pathological), and methods of early intervention and prevention.

This balanced perspective on a highly emotional issue will find a wide audience among psychiatric and medical professionals (child, clinical, and forensic psychiatrists and psychologists; social workers; obstetricians/gynecologists and midwives; nurses; and pediatricians), legal professionals (judges, attorneys, law students), public health professionals, and interested laypersons.

Doody Review Services

Reviewer: Steven T. Herron, MD (University of Arizona Health Sciences Center)
Description: This concise and easy-to-read book reports on recent research results and provides a brief review of prior studies on neonaticide and infanticide. Authors from fields such as medicine, psychology, and law pen 11 of the 13 chapters.
Purpose: Two major purposes for this book are described: to provide suggestions to other investigators for future research and to assist "mental health and law practitioners" participating in cases with "women accused of infanticide."
Audience: The primary audience for this book are mental health professionals (primarily forensic practitioners both in the evaluation and treatment of this specific population, as well as those involved in research of forensic populations) and attorneys defending women accused of these crimes.
Features: This book includes 11 chapters individually written by various professionals involved with research, treatment, evaluation, and defense of women accused of neonaticide or infanticide. A chapter about a separate British law for women committing these offenses provides a global view on differing approaches to the problem. There is also a discussion on the history of infanticide and neonaticide in the first chapter. In addition, an anonymous therapist discusses the struggle to overcome the stereotypes and countertransference involved in treating these patients in chapter. Each chapter has an extensive list of references at its conclusion.
Assessment: Overall, this interesting and well-organized book provides an updated review of the limited literature on the topic of infanticide and neonaticide. The newer studies provide additional insight into the characteristics associated with these offenders and, in general, attempts to address previously unanswered questions about these women to provide a more comprehensive risk assessment picture. Yet, one of the drawbacks of this work is the apparent bias of many of the chapters' authors. Although the introduction of the book relates a bias on the part of the editor, numerous chapters attempt to explain all incidents of this disturbing crime as related to psychiatric illness and chemical disturbance. Even given that women with psychiatric disorders commit many, if not most, of these offenses, it is unfair to those with legitimate mental illness to combine women who commit these crimes for other reasons in the same category. As with most cases involving the interpretation of behavior following events, each case should be reviewed and examined on its own facts for the determination of guilt or innocence. Most readers, like the authors and editor, would agree that punishing legitimately psychiatrically ill offenders serves no real purpose, especially those committing the tragic acts described in these pages. However, many would also argue that blindly excusing criminal behavior before exploring the facts specific to each individual case is unjust and unacceptable.

Booknews

There is a dearth of references for the legal and medical professions on the subject of mothers who kill, according to Spinelli (psychiatry, Columbia U. College of Physicians and Surgeons, among other affiliations), and even less on fathers who kill; she hopes that closer attention to the subject will help save lives. Thirteen contributions from psychiatrists, psychologists, and lawyers discuss the epidemiology of infanticide and historical legal statutes, biopsychosocial and cultural perspectives (postpartum disorders; denial of pregnancy; culture, scarcity, and maternal thinking); contemporary legislation; and treatment and prevention. Addiction and Spirituality: A Multidisciplinary Approach

Author: H Benjamin Bohren

Recovering addicts often testify to the power of a spiritual element in their healing and continuing sobriety. Those who treat addiction also recognize the value of spirituality, but there is, as yet, no general agreement on what spirituality is and how it works.

This groundbreaking volume gathers reflective essays from recognized, respected professionals in such diverse fields as medicine, psychiatry, clinical psychology, and pastoral counseling, each with his or her unique perspective on the role of spirituality in addiction and recovery.

From the juxtaposition of these varying points of view can come an ongoing conversation on both the theoretical and practical implications of spirituality and addiction.

Client Centered Exercise Prescription or Pumped

Client-Centered Exercise Prescription

Author: John C Griffin

Client-Centered Exercise Prescription, Second Edition, will help fitness professionals listen to their clients, assess their interests, and prescribe exercise that will work for them. The text maintains the first edition's focus on the individual by discarding the "one-program-fits-all" blueprint and emphasizing instead a personalized approach in which unique programs are designed to meet the interests and needs of each client.

This edition is extensively revised, with substantial new material on activity counseling, client motivation, and step-by-step prescription models, which are directly linked to program design. The models facilitate fitness professionals' ability to make informed, client-centered decisions and address the following issues:

* Establishing rapport and increasing adherence by prescribing exercise programs that match clients' desires, needs, and lifestyles
* Understanding clients' unique psychological needs and using that information to keep them motivated and on track
* Integrating principles and strategies for client-centered assessment and prescription that will enable fitness professionals to address and monitor clients' needs both as they are originally presented and as they evolve over time
* Detailing the competencies of exercise demonstration, design modification, and follow-up monitoring
* Applying strategies for treating and preventing overuse injuries so that clients avoid injury and frustration, thereby avoiding withdrawal from the program

The models in Client-Centered Exercise Prescription, Second Edition, include activity counseling, cardiovascular conditioning, resistance training, weight management, exercise design, and program demonstration and modification, as well as the much-neglected area of assessment and treatment for muscle balance. The text explains the vital role that muscle balance plays in maintaining musculoskeletal health and teaches how to recognize and treat muscle imbalance before it causes serious damage. Reproducible worksheets-ranging from informational forms for clients to checklists and prescription cards for professionals-facilitate the use of the models to make exercise prescription easy and precise. Illustrated handouts of stretches and exercises for specific injuries are also included. These exercises can be incorporated into the client's program, and the handouts can be photocopied for clients to use as a guide for properly performing the exercises at home.

The second edition of Client-Centered Exercise Prescription is an outstanding resource for all professionals and students interested in learning to prescribe exercise for each client's unique and changing needs. To help students grasp the concepts presented, many pedagogical aids, sidebars, and checklists have been added. Competencies are listed at the beginning of each chapter, and icons in the margins identify the information crucial for the certified personal trainer program certification of the Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology (CSEP-CPT). The upgrades to the text also include extensive illustrations, examples, and case studies that demonstrate the practical application of concepts so that students can use them in real-life situations. The result is a text that clearly presents a unique, personalized approach to prescribing exercise and to helping clients adopt, enjoy, and maintain active lifestyles.

Scott H. Grindel

This well written book is intended to individualize an exercise/fitness program to meet clients specific needs. The book was designed to stress empathy and rapport with clients in order to get to know them and to "show them you care." It then provides information on programs specifically designed for each individual client. This transition is well done and easily followed. Though the book was designed for the exercise specialist, it would also be of interest to the student, strength coach, physical therapist, or athletic trainer. The author is well suited to write this text in that he is an active professor, board member, speaker, and author on the subject of fitness and lifestyle management. The content covers the categories of client counseling, musculoskeletal assessment, personalized prescription for weight management and conditioning, as well as individualized programs for the injured athlete and those with medical problems. There are many useful handouts, questionnaires, and tables provided. There are also numerous references cited. I find this book very informative. It delivers information appropriate for the student learner, but also contains useful knowledge for even the seasoned athletic trainer or physical therapist.

Pumped: Straight Facts for Athletes about Drugs, Supplements and Training

Steroids, stimulants, supplements: today's athlete is offered an array of drugs and dietary enhancements to solve every problem from weight to speed. What's safe? What works? What's a waste of money? Pumped offers the latest research-based information in an accessible and informative style. Pumped explains the body basics that every athlete must know for optimum performance. It also offers the reader straight information about drugs and supplements for weight control, muscle building, and endurance training. What an athlete uses in the off-training time is important too, and Pumped covers recreational drugs—from alcohol to speed—how they can seem to help performance, how they hurt, and for how long. Following the success of the authors' previous work, Buzzed, which was praised as "sane, sharp, and up to speed on all the latest research" (The Independent), Pumped provides a no-nonsense guide to drugs and their effects on the athletic brain and body. 4 pages of color illustrations.

Library Journal

This excellent book is not solely for athletes--anyone who wants to have more energy will benefit. Although the focus is on drugs and supplements, the advice on dieting and explanations of the body's physiology will interest those who would like to be fit. The tone is objective and balanced, and the authors (Buzzed: The Straight Facts About the Most Used and Abused Drugs from Alcohol to Ecstasy) explain with great clarity what published research has shown about steroids, hormones, dietary supplements, alcohol, and caffeine. The writing style is lively and fast paced: "Creatine is becoming increasingly popular as a nutritional supplement to prolong exercise tolerance. The problem is that it lasts about 10 seconds." An excellent chapter, "How To Read the Ads," tells the reader how to judge claims critically and evaluate scientific research. The work concludes with a bibliography in which the authors try "to list the best available studies supporting or refuting the effectiveness of various performance-enhancing agents." Highly recommended for public, undergraduate, and medical libraries.--Natalie Kupferberg, Ohio State Univ., Columbus Copyright 2000 Cahners Business Information.
